The Genetic health of the ancestors of your puppy DIRECTLY impacts the genetic health of your puppy!
Carefully bred Cairn Terriers are really very healthy dogs. They are long-lived - about 13-16 years and remain
in good health through out their lives. However there are few genetic conditions that Cairns are predisposed to and knowing about them is very important to you and your puppy.
Making sure your breeder is health testing for these conditions is key in the health of your dog. BE an informed consumer - ask the questions and VERIFY fact from fiction.
The Cairn Terrier Club of America is the AKC National Breed Organization and the stewards of the Cairn Terrier in America. They have devoted substantial resources and time supporting the health of the cairn terrier through research, breeder education,clinics and health recommendations.
To encourage Cairn Terrier breeders to comply with pre-breeding genetic screening, the Cairn Terrier Club of America has determined MINIMAL HEALTH TESTING STANDARDS for the Cairn Terrier.

YOUR breeder should be testing in these areas BEFORE breeding (at least) and should willingly provide you documentation. This is more than a vet visit. Unfortunately many breeders are uneducated or simply don't care.
SnowedOn Cairn Health Testing Program
At SnowedOn we have a very serious approach to genetic screening and health testing. We demonstrate our commitment to the health of the breed and our puppies by extensively health testing adulth BEFORE breeding to do our best to prevent inherited genetic disease. We have done this testing for generations and document our results for public view on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database.
Our Program meets (and exceeds) the Cairn Terrier Club of America's health Testing Standard and includes:
OFA Patellar Luxation,
OFA Cardiac Exam with a Board Certified Cardiologist
OFA GLC (globoid cell leukodystrophy)
OFA/CERF Eyes - with a Board Certified Canine Opthamologist
Paired Bile Acids and Renal Ultrasounds
